Every year when I take out my Christmas lights, they are all tangled up, and it takes forever to sort them out. It always reminds me of an interesting area of maths called Knot Theory.
Of these four knots (1-4), two can be untangled to make a simple loop. Which ones can be untangled?

The two knots that couldn’t be untangled can each be twisted and turned into one of these knots (a-d). Which ones?
This is much harder – it might help to find a piece of string and create the knots yourself!
