1729 Maths School is open to exceptional young mathematicians from all backgrounds. Our vision is that a family's financial circumstances should not determine whether a student is offered a place, and that substantial bursary support will be available to families with genuine financial need.
Offers to 1729 are need-blind. Offers are made on the basis of a student's suitability for the school. This is never influenced by a family's financial circumstances.
Bursaries are then awarded following a means-tested assessment, carried out by an independent assessor. To be eligible for bursaries, families must be resident in the UK throughout the child’s membership of 1729. The process begins in late October each year, and is similar to that of other leading independent schools.
1729 differs from many schools in that our bursary fund allows us to provide financial assistance to a greater number of successful applicants, thus enabling access to a greater number of talented students.
The level of support available is substantial. In the cohort starting in September 2026, around one third of students were awarded full bursaries, and over half received some level of financial assistance. For this cohort, bursary funding will cover 51% of the total fees payable, and we expect to cover a similar percentage in future years.
Families are informed of bursary outcomes at the same time as admissions decisions in February, allowing them to consider the overall offer before making a decision.
