One of the distinctive features of boarding at 1729 Maths School is that, for many pupils and their families, it was something they had never seriously considered before applying. In many cases, boarding has been a pleasant surprise.
Understandably, there were some nerves and apprehension ahead of the start of term. However, our pupils have settled in superbly and embraced everything that boarding life has to offer.
Since reopening as a dedicated boarding house for 1729 pupils in September, St Bees House has quickly become a hub of activity and community for pupils at the Maths School. While there have certainly been plenty of passionate discussions about Maths Challenge questions, the House is just as often a place to relax, socialise, play football and board games, or settle down for a movie night.
Life for boarders at 1729 is further enriched by being part of the wider Mill Hill boarding community. Regular Sunday trips provide a mix of cultural experiences and outdoor activities, alongside plenty of opportunities to make friends across the School.
Now, almost half a term into our first year, we invited several pupils to share their experiences of life in St Bees so far.
Erin, Year 7
"After a day at school, you can join an after-school club or take part in an optional maths elective at St Bees. You can also work out in the gym or just relax. Afterwards, we have House Assembly. Dinner is delicious, and after that we have an hour of Prep. In the evening, we have free time when we can watch The Traitors, go to the Music School or play board games. We can also play badminton, football or table tennis in the garden."
Toyin, Year 7
"The main thing I enjoy about boarding is that, even though we are in different year groups, we all mix together and have fun.We get free time between 7.00pm and lights out, with bedtimes extending by 15 minutes for each year group. During this time, you can play table tennis, use the Nintendo, play Risk, Catan, card games and much more.My favourite thing to do is play football, badminton or volleyball in the garden with some of the Year 9 pupils. I also enjoy watching The Traitors, Harry Potter and other films on the TV while relaxing on the bean bags."
Renat, Year 9
"At the start of my boarding experience, I wasn't sure whether I would enjoy it. However, now that I am settled in, I can definitely say that I do. Boarding provides incredible opportunities, and you meet so many wonderful people. One of my favourite days was when the whole boarding community visited central London. It was a memorable experience. We took a ferry on the River Thames and visited a Museum. St Bees is always exciting and productive. Whether you want to relax, play sports or spend time with friends, there is always something to do. The atmosphere is welcoming, inclusive and friendly.
Boarding has been an integral part of my 1729 experience. St Bees is home to a wonderful community, supported by a caring Housemaster and fellow boarders who are always welcoming. Even if you feel nervous at first, you quickly feel right at home."
